RCCB Upgrade in Bedok – Fire & Shock Prevention

In July 2025, Singapore’s new regulation kicks in: all residential properties built before July 1985 must have Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCBs) installed or upgraded.

One of our latest projects in Bedok was a timely reminder of why this law exists—and how it can save lives.

🔧 The Problem: Old Electrical System, No RCCB

Our team was called in after the homeowner noticed:
- Flickering lights in the kitchen
- Mild electric shocks from touching the washing machine
- A breaker that wouldn’t trip even during faults

Upon inspection, we found that:
- The unit was using an outdated fuse-based system
- There was no RCCB protection on any power circuit
- Wiring insulation had degraded due to age and heat

⚠️ This setup posed a serious risk of electrocution or fire.

✅ The Solution: Full RCCB Upgrade & Testing

Our Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) provided:
1. Load testing to ensure system compatibility
2. New RCCB installation on all power circuits
3. Wiring integrity check with insulation resistance testing
4. SP Group safety report with signed-off compliance

Now, the Bedok homeowner is protected against:
- Earth leakage faults
- Electrical fires
- Risk of fatal shock from wet appliances

🤔 Common Questions From Homeowners

Q1: I’ve never touched my DB box in years. Why change it now?
🔌 RCCBs are not optional anymore—they are required under SS638 and EMA safety requirements. Old fuses or MCBs do not detect leakage current, which is what kills.

Q2: How do I know if I already have RCCBs?
🧰 Check your DB box—if your main circuit breaker is marked as “RCCB” or “ELCB,” you might already have it. Still unsure? Snap a photo and send it to us for free assessment.

Q3: Can any electrician install this for me?
👷 No. Only a LEW can perform RCCB upgrades legally and submit compliance to SP Group. Always ask for credentials.

Q4: Will my appliances trip more often?
RCCBs don’t cause trips unless there is leakage or faulty wiring. If your appliance trips the RCCB, it’s a sign it needs inspection—not a bad thing!
